Low coffee table designed and signed by Roger Capron.
Roger Capron (1922 – 2006) was born in Vincennes, France. Interested in drawing at a young age, he studied applied arts in Paris in the early 1940s. By 1946, Capron moved to Vallauris where he founded a ceramics workshop and subsequently a pottery factory. By the mid 1950s, he had developed an international reputation as a ceramicist for both his graphic use of glaze as well as his “fossil-inspired” treatment of tiles; arrangements of such formed engaging surfaces for a series of midcentury tables.
Noted here is an extraordinary example of the designer’s round coffee table form. It features a perimeter of keystone-shaped tiles with impressed leaves and vegetation that takes its inspiration from plant fossils – a signature Capron style referred to as “garrigue.” Capron’s “fossils” have been organized around a central core of four undecorated curved, wedge-shaped petals. The tiles are embedded within a gray mortar that exquisitely complements Capron’s sophisticated use of tobacco and brown glazes. The resulting textural and tonal ceramic tile pastiche becomes a magnificent foil for the table’s dark wood perimeter reveal supported by four equidistant and substantial rectilinear planes. The artist has bifurcated the round surface – a seldom seen element in the Capron’s work – this adds both an unexpected complexity to the piece and augments its visual interest.
This piece functions both as a sculpture and surface and will instantly become the focal point of any interior in which it is placed. In excellent vintage condition; please contact us for additional photos.
